Scratchleys on the Wharf

Gourmet200 Wharf Rd, Newcastle

Scratchley's – Newcastle Wharf. So the Lady and I decided we would spend a little wind-fall I received on a dinner with some class at a well-known restaurant in our local city, in Newcastle, NSW. The lucky restaurant is Scratchley's on the Wharf. It has been an overcast day and the evening looked rather threatening as we parked just a mere fifty metres from our destination. We had hoped to enjoy a lovely sunset over the harbour as we dined but that was not to be so. Upon entering and stating our reservation which probaly wasn't needed at 5:30pm on a Thursday evening, the lovely waitress showed us to our table near the waterfront windows. Lovely setting and a little romantic if not for the horrible rainclouds closing in around us. We ordered a small Baguette with some chili/Lime and Garlic spreads to kick us off while our mains were preparing. They filled the waiting cavities beautifully. The Lady had ordered a favourite of hers, Crunchy Peanut Satay King Prawns on Kaffir Lime with Basmati rice and a small salad, which she thoroughly enjoyed. My plate was a simple Huon Atlantic Salmon baked in a slasa Verde with roasted potato, cherry tomoatoes, baby spinach and Pine nut salad.. The Salmon with crispy skin was cooked to perfection, having the sides dressed with care around the plate. The attentiveness and the assistance of the waiters/waitresses was almost intuitive and nothing seemed to be too much effort for them, even offering my Lady a glass of ice when she just mentioned her ice had melted before she had finished her glass, asking if I wanted a grind of black pepper on my meal, which I usually enjoy. For dessert we were a little predictable in ordering a simple Home made waffles with hazelnut chocolate sauce, Vanilla ice cream and fresh strawberries. The waffles were not soggy or overdone and had that wonderful crispness about them as you cut them. The chcolate cauce was not that sweet gooey stuff from a bottle but a little bitter and dark for a hazelnut which was balanced by the sweetness of the strawberries. Thrown together with the Vanilla ice cream it tasted like an old favourite with a bit of a twist to it. All in all, with a couple of Soda's, as we are not alcoholic users, we tipped the scales at just under $100 but we felt it was a satisfyingly wonderful meal as we exited back outside to the precipitation dancing around our feet and we made our way back to the car. Scratchely's is definitley a place I would spend another evening having a delicious meal, during a working week. The reviews we read beforehand mentioned that weekdays Monday to Thursday are less demanding for dinner and that booking would be essential for Friday and weekends. we loved it! David C.Dave Clough

Came here for a birthday party with friends. Service was very good and they took great care of us. While the meals were delicious, the portion sizes weren't too big for the price. Can't complain too much with water front views though, it's in a pretty top location. This place is always busy and they turn the tables a couple of times each night. Very popular indeed. Great place to come for business, with friends or that hot date you've been planning since you spotted mister or missus Right across the office at work. Dan Hall

I've been there several times. The staff is really friendly, spanish and latin-american music at the adequate volume and the food is superb, not recommended for a vegetarian, though, as most of the spanish and south-american food. Average per person is about $30 to $35 with a cup of wine. I strongly suggest the lamb (peruvian style) and the mussels (spanish style). You should call for reservation, although it is small, it is mostly crowded every day.A Google User

We recently went to Bocados in a group of 7, booked in at 8:30pm, unfortunately the food delivery was extremely slow and the heavier dishes did not arrive until 10pm and then they all come at once, ended up taking home last dish, very disappointing experience, wont' be rushing back at $65 per head for food and drinks.Suella Smith
